The 26th annual Montreal World Film Festival (Aug. 22-Sept. 2) was truly a global event, hosting companies from 75 countries that screened more than 406 films, including 248 world premieres.
The international flavor of the Festival was enhanced by such invitees as French director and producer Luc Besson, who received the Lifetime Award, Spanish director Carlos Saura (with new film Salome), French actor Gerard Depardieu and Chilean director Raul Ruiz, who screened his latest film, Rapsodie Chilienne. President of the Jury was prize-winning Iranian director Majid Majidi. Robert de Niro came to promote his latest film, City By the Sea.
