Dec. 30--Even environmentalists can't hug every tree.
At the Crooked Creek Preserve in northeastern Walworth County, volunteers have been cutting down red pines that were planted generations ago.
The pine trees -- thousands of them -- are as thick as mosquitoes in July, and over time they have swarmed around the oak trees that dominated the landscape in bygone days.
The owner of the preserve, the Nature Conservancy, could have used mechanized logging equipment to weed them out. But big trucks would damage the land, causing erosion and sending sediment ...
