They don't call it the City Beautiful for nothing. The city of Coral Gables, located within Miami-Dade County, was developed by George Merrick in 1926 as the nation's first master-planned community. Although the hurricane of 1926 destroyed most of Merrick's original $75 million project, visitors today can still see about 80 of the original residences, which are intended to reflect the architecture of six destinations-the Florida Pioneer Village, the French 18th Century village, the French Normandy Village, the Dutch South African Village, the Italian Village and the Chinese Village.
