Ben & Jerry's has introduced a new vanilla ice cream, Vanilla For A Change, promising consumers that it will "satisfy your taste buds while indulging your social conscience!" Vanilla For a Change is made with a special blend that includes vanilla made from beans from family farms in Indonesia.
According to Ben & Jerry's, the farmers live mostly in remote villages, farm on fragile, sloping lands, and labor "for less than adequate incomes." But things are looking up for them as a result of the involvement by a ForesTrade, an international trade company based, like Ben & Jerry's, in Vermont, that supplies organic spices, coffee, and essential oils.
