Charles Bennett, the founding artistic director of First Chamber Dance Company, a primary force in Seattle dance in the 1970s, died Dec. 27 in Mexico after a long fight with cancer. He was 68.
When Mr. Bennett and his troupe of dancers from New York arrived in Seattle in the early 1970s, there was little professional dance and none at the artistic level and international experience of First Chamber. The company helped jump-start the art form locally.
