No Wisconsin legislator ever saw the future so clearly, and rushed toward it so aggressively, as Lloyd Barbee. His death this week at the age of 77 robs Wisconsin of one of its greatest battlers for justice, but it also offers a reminder of the fact that true leaders are always controversial, courageous and far ahead of their times.
And Lloyd Barbee was about as true a leader as Wisconsin ever saw.
Elected to the state Assembly in 1964 as a Democrat from Milwaukee, Barbee arrived with a reputation as a rabble-rouser.
