USA offers patent moratorium for LDCs, as WTO drug access talks collapse US Trade Representative Robert Zoellick has announced an interim plan to help the world's poorest countries import generic drugs to treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other diseases that pose national health crises.
The USA will permit poor countries to override patents on drugs produced abroad in order to fight current and future epidemics, stated Ambassador Zoellick, speaking after the World Trade Organization's member states failed to reach agreement by the end-2002 deadline on how poor nations without the capacity to manufacture these drugs should be able to access them ...
