The lawsuit against UW-Madison's Regional Primate Research Center, in which veterinarian Jennifer Hess claims she was fired by the center for raising concern about the treatment of research monkeys, makes us question our treatment of primates in Madison. I see three problems with the research center:
* It has little public accountability.
Two years ago, I asked Joseph Kemnitz, the center's director, for a meeting so I could learn about the center's experiments and hear his rationale for them. While I was opposed to animal experimentation in general, I did not want to take a stand against the research center without first gathering facts. ...
