IN THE NAPA-LEATHER-BOUND agendas of Italy's elite, September 20 was a date long reserved for the inauguration of the Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli, in Turin. Invitations from the Agnellis are always prized and this occasion was no exception: Fia patriarch Agnelli and his wife, who, lacking only crowns, reign as unofficial king and queen of Italy, had commissioned Renzo Piano to design a public gallery atop the historic former Fiat factory at Lingotto, then donated 25 masterpieces of art to form a permanent collection.
