Arguing that human health was their main concern, farm ministers from the European Union voted last Monday to tighten Europe's ban on the use of growth-promoting hormones in beef and veal production.
The proposal accepted by the farm ministers amends a current regulation (Directive 96/22/EC), further restricting the growth hormone estradiol 17-beta to three uses by veterinarians. The EU said estradiol 17-beta is a "complete carcinogen." The "provisional" ban on five other hormones -- testosterone, progesterone, trenbolone acetate, zeranol and melengestrol acetate -- will continue.
