I've always liked "Julius Caesar." I've admired its poetry and power ever since we read portions of the play in 8th grade English.
The play contains some of Shakespeare's most often quoted lines. But I don't love the play for its wonderful poetry; even Shakespeare's weakest plays contain flashes of marvelous poetry.
I love the play because it is very much a work about tough- minded politicians, propelled by a desire for power, but tempered by patriotism. Every character on both sides of the conspiracy against Julius Caesar believes he or she is working for the good of Rome. Each one in this taut, ...
