In November 2002, the resignation of Patrick Tierney as head of Thomson Financial sparked a shift in management at Thomson Corp. Harrington, Thomson's president and CEO, took the opportunity to shift the top executives in three of the four major groups at the giant corporation. Harrington has long espoused a strategy of executive cross-training in the vast Thomson empire. The company has some $7.2 billion in annual sales, 44,000 employees worldwide, and an estimated 20 million customers.
