Jan. 7--KEY WEST, Fla. -- The view these days from the patio of Key West's famed Rooftop Cafe includes multilayered cruise ships that tower like giant wedding cakes over Key West's historic waterfront.
In recent years, the cruise industry has turned Key West into a major port of call -- a distinction that translated into at least 800,000 disembarked day-trippers last year, and the docking of 81 mammoth vessels last month.
