The doors of Chicago's new John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County were recently opened to service the public.
The new facility, named in honor of John H. Stroger Jr., president of the Cook County Board of Commissioners and commissioner of the 4th District, is adjacent to the 88-year-old Cook County Hospital that served as inspiration for the award winning NBC TV drama "ER."
The idea for renaming the hospital after Stroger was originally proposed to the Board by the Rev. Jesse Jackson (JET, Jan. 14, 2002).
