Several new laws going into effect on Jan. 1 will give employees more power -- at the expense of many of the small businesses that employ them.
Susan Kemp, senior labor law counsel for the California Chamber Commerce, warned that due to AB 749, which raised the level of workers' compensation benefits, employers could see their workers' compensation costs increase by 75 percent or more.
Costs vary by profession, with high-risk jobs such as roofing contractors seeing the greatest increases. But this law will affect employers across the board, Kemp said.
