No one was injured when 10 freight cars derailed at Union Pacific's Eugene rail yard early Friday.
The accident occurred about 6 a.m. during routine switching at the yard, which runs parallel to the Northwest Expressway, said Howard Fegles, rail safety manager for the state Department of Transportation. An empty boxcar derailed, followed by nine mixed freight cars, he said.
The cause was still under investigation Friday evening. Railroad officials planned to review the locomotive event recorder, a device that keeps information about the speed, direction and movement of the train, Fegles said.
