Despite the abundance of literature urging people to give blood, there is still a reluctance to come forward and make donations.
So promoting the idea of becoming a bone marrow donor is littered with obstacles.
But the National Blood Service, the group responsible for taking our donations and putting them to good use, is determined to encourage more people to do so.
The service has launched a recruitment campaign in the Midlands to increase awareness of the need for bone marrow donors and attract more people on to the register.
