Thanks to the devotion, discipline and creativity of one of their relatives, some people no doubt unwrapped a present over Christmas of rare sentimentality and practicality -- a family cookbook.
Arranged tidily and affectionately between the covers would be recipes for the apple pie a mother faithfully packed for her children every time they returned to their college dorms, the chicken a grandfather invariably left on the grill a tad too long each Fourth of July, the blueberry muffins for which a Midwestern aunt won a blue ribbon at the county fair each summer.
