MORE than half a million secondary school pupils are being taught maths by teachers who have 'weak' or no knowledge of the subject at all, a survey has found.
And a quarter of teachers have virtually no experience and did degrees in other subjects such as PE and music, but were taken on anyway because of the worsening recruitment crisis.
Fewer than four out of ten of last year's new maths teachers were considered 'good appointments', according to a poll by the Open University's Centre for Mathematics Education and the National Association of Mathematics Advisers.
