A TROPICAL downpour greets me the morning I arrive in the Maldives, covering the airport terminal in half an inch of water. The morning is steamy and the sky overcast and grey. It's very unusual weather for the Maldives, I'm assured.

By lunchtime the storm has moved on, the sun is shining again and the temperature is in the 80s. This is more like it: the weather in the Maldives tends to be hot and sunny all year long, and rain is definitely discouraged.
