Leasing an apartment can cost a chunk of money when the first month's rent, a security deposit and sometimes even the last month's rent is required before moving in.
It can make the apartment seem unaffordable for some.
"It's a problem that has existed for a long, long time," said Larry Olness of the United Way of Dane County. "As the market in Dane County for rent goes up, the ability to get that higher amount becomes more problematic."
