Jan. 14--At a time when the Republican Party is struggling to repair its damaged image with black and Latino voters, the Bush administration this week faces the most delicate race issue of its short tenure: Whether to take a stand on a sweeping legal challenge to affirmative action in college admissions.
Experts say the president could stay out of the debate or strike a cautious position on a pair of high-profile lawsuits before the Supreme Court that oppose the University of Michigan's race-conscious admissions policies.
