Jan. 15--CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.--Israeli Col. Ilan Ramon is as much emissary as astronaut.
His country, starved for good news and inspiration, has imbued this fighter pilot's first flight Thursday aboard NASA's space shuttle Columbia with history and hope.
"I could never characterize myself as Alan Shepard or John Glenn," Ramon says. "But of course for the Israeli people and the Jewish community, it's a big deal because I'm the first, and it's a great honor."
The shuttle Columbia is scheduled to lift off Thursday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. CST from Kennedy Space ...
