JERUSALEM _ Israel's Labor Party said Tuesday that it would not form a coalition government with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and his hawkish Likud Party after national elections in two weeks.
Many Israelis viewed the move as an attempt by Labor leader Amram Mitzna to take advantage of the corruption scandal that has sent Sharon's popularity plunging and wrest the prime minister's mantle away. Mitzna is a strong advocate of dialogue with Palestinians.
The possibility that the Labor Party could succeed in leading its own coalition government and installing Mitzna as prime minister seems like a long shot. But Labor's ...
