ST. LOUIS _ National experts reported surprising new findings about the transmission of West Nile virus at a conference in Bridgeton, Mo., on Thursday.
The West Nile epidemic, which is now the largest outbreak of a mosquito-borne encephalitis in the Western Hemisphere, is expected to continue spreading west across the United States.
Until now, scientists thought only mosquitoes could transmit the virus. But new research has shown that some birds may pass the virus directly to other birds.
Scientists now also suspect that species other than birds may act as a source of the virus.
