News Corporation has approached the European Commission in the hope of persuading a four-month regulatory review to allow the company to take over Italian pay-TV operator Telepiu and dominate a country Mr Murdoch once described as "one of the last untapped frontiers for pay-TV."

The E893mn takeover, which would see News Corp assume E423mn of the Italian operator's debt, would allow the company to merge its existing Telecom Italia co-venture, Stream, with Telepiu to create Italy's dominant satellite television company and monopolise the pay-TV market.
