Enlargement will entail changes for the EU's forestry sector - an important source of economic prosperity and provider of employment in much of the enlarged EU, and an important environmental factor. The area of commercially exploitable forest will grow by almost a third. Managing this, and particularly the large proportion of young and middle-aged forests much of its will represent, will be both a challenge and an opportunity for forestry in the applicant countries, according to an opinion adopted in 2002 by the European Economic and Social Committee, "Eastward enlargement of the European Union and the forestry sector".
