Heading to the spring (or fall) turkey woods with a shotgun that has never been tested on paper is as foolish as heading to the deer woods with a rifle that has never been sighted in. But evidently lots of people do it: I read recently that only one in 10 turkey hunters ever goes to the trouble of pattern-testing his or her shotgun.
It may come as a surprise to those other nine turkey hunters, but it is not uncommon for a shotgun to place the center of its pattern somewhere other than where its shooter is holding. The degree of error can range from not enough to matter to enough to cause you to miss by a country mile.
