The Mariners didn't want a standard "happy to be here" utility man, so they got one whose goal matches their own.
"When you get to this stage of your career, it's important to have a chance to win," said John Mabry, who signed on for a second tour of duty in Seattle yesterday. "You want to give yourself every opportunity to make it to the postseason and get to a championship."
Mabry, 32, who played for Seattle in 1999 and 2000, received a one-year contract with a club option for 2004. Financial terms were not disclosed, but his 2003 salary is believed to be about $700,000.
