How poignantly coincidental it is that the city of Seattle this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the grand plan for its stunning string of green spaces and scenic boulevards - "emerald necklaces strung with playgrounds and parks," as it was put in 1903 by the system's prescient designer.
As the state and King County's once proud parks systems crumble like Mount St. Helens due to a lack of funding - manifested by the closure of dozens of popular parks from Lake Washington to the Columbia River - Seattle is launching its Olmsted Centennial.
