In a flex of the Russian Orthodox Church's muscle on a highly politicized issue, nearly 1,000 believers took part in a prayer rally in Moscow recently to demand that the Russian government introduce Orthodox Christian education into schools nationwide.
The demonstrators, many of them carrying icons under a heavy snowfall, listened to speeches December 15 from Russian lawmakers and Orthodox Christian leaders who called for increased recognition of the 1,000-year-old church's contribution to the country.
