THE year was 1844. Air travel across the seas was the favorite subject matter of science fiction writers. One day, the New York Sun published a news report about a phenomenal event: the first ever threeday crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a steering balloon named Victoria. In a matter of hours, the newspaper was selling at a price twice the original. People rejoiced over such an extraordinary human achievement. Some even started to make plans to join the next trip aboard Victoria.
The news report is now known as The Balloon Hoax. The three-day crossing of the Atlantic never happened. There was no such balloon named ...
