THE year was 1844. Air travel across the seas was the favorite subject matter of science fiction writers. One day, the New York Sun published a news report about a phenomenal event: the first ever threeday crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by a steering balloon named Victoria. In a matter of hours, the newspaper was selling at a price twice the original. People rejoiced over such an extraordinary human achievement. Some even started to make plans to join the next trip aboard Victoria.
