Over our 59-year history, our primary mission has been to apply science and technology to problems of national security. At first our mission was dedicated principally to stockpile stewardship, but an ever-changing world has expanded our mission to cover other global threats, such as computer hacking and biological terrorism.
The Laboratory also conducts basic and applied research that addresses societal issues, such as developing alternative energy sources, designing the world's first functional quantum computer, and tracking down the most common ancestor of the HIV-1 strains responsible for AIDS.
