In Nassau on New Providence Island in the Bahamas, contrasts are stark and intriguing.
The British imprint on the island remains, but there are vestiges of other cultures, too. Puritans made their homes here in the 17th century. Pirates held sway for a generation and more. The Spanish raided every now and again. After one particularly devastating such raid, the major city on New Providence, Charles Town, was burned to the ground. When it was rebuilt it had a new name: Nassau.
Most prevalent of all the cultures to survive here, of course, is African. It is pervasive and fascinating. Nassau has had its ups and downs ...
