Jan. 22--WASHINGTON--Civil rights activist Al Sharpton formally entered the Democratic presidential race Tuesday, saying his campaign for the party's nomination would "change American politics."
The 48-year-old New York minister, whose political advocacy has landed him in jail in Puerto Rico and in hot water in numerous other jurisdictions, is the sixth person to open a presidential exploratory committee. He is the first African-American Democrat to make a White House bid since Jesse Jackson in 1988.
