Lake in the Hills ended its 50th anniversary celebration last month with rows of twinkling holiday trees outside village hall.
Board members recently handed out awards to the best in that Festival of Trees.
The two-fold event was conceived by outgoing Parks and Recreation board member Edward Hynes, who thought pairing the holidays and charity would be a good idea.
He was right.
For the event, area schools collected canned goods and other nonperishable items for the local Lake in the Hills/Algonquin Food Pantry.
