This Week: 1963's bawdy year in film lets "Tom Jones" and the Brits nab some Oscars
It was a sexy season for film in 1963. Acting nominees included ne'er-do-well womanizers played by Albert Finney and Paul Newman in "Tom Jones" and "Hud"; women having children out of wedlock by Leslie Caron and Natalie Wood in "The L-Shaped Room" and "Love with the Proper Stranger"; Bobby Darin as a drug addict in "Captain Newman, M.D.," and Shirley MacLaine as the floozy in "Irma LaDouce."
The year at the box office was dominated by Elizabeth Taylor in "Cleopatra," Federico Fellini's scandalous "8-{" and the mischievous "Tom Jones," starring Finney as a gadabout ...
