There is no more dreaded word to parent, teacher, or child than lice. Every year that I've taught, no matter which grade, one of my students has had head lice. I had managed to stay lice-free myself and felt confident that I was somehow beyond the reach of such childhood hazards.
Then came the head-lice outbreak of '96. Not only were large numbers of children catching head lice, but the tiny bugs had developed resistance to the medicated shampoos and were reinfesting children who had already been treated.
Nearly all the classes at my school had one or two kids with head lice that year. Me? I was the lucky one: Seven of my students got lice.
