A surrealistic scene is unfolding aboard the 68-foot, cypress-hulled commercial dragger Triple R out of Chincoteague Island, Va.
The moon is off the port quarter, the sea calm, and a warm breeze whispers out of the southwest. Off in the distance can be seen the double flash of the old Assateague lighthouse, still pumping a beacon as it has done for 136 years.
The vessel's onboard lights reveal a deck alive with moving forms. Throughout the squiggling mass can be seen armor, spears and poison barbs colored in olive, gray and white, They resemble scattered carnage after some mediaeval battle.
But there is no death here. And although those forms ...
