There are a lot of secrets your librarian keeps.
The trashy romance novels you love. The Internet job search. The book on how to quit smoking.
Imagine then, if your private tastes, indulgences and needs were turned over to the scrutiny of federal agents.
It's possible, say civil rights and library activists, because of a 2001 law called the USA Patriot Act.
The Patriot Act, passed by Congress after the Sept. 11 attacks, gives law enforcement greater authority to investigate terrorists.
Its detractors believe those powers go well beyond the scope of the Constitution.
