Jan. 25--Amid the weakest national economy in a decade, Rhode Island out-performed every other New England state and scored near the top nationally on several key tests.
Jobs ticked up, housing prices soared and sales tax revenues, though far lower than during the '90s boom years, continued to climb. Rhode Island is now among a minority of states that expect to squeak through this fiscal year with no budget shortfall.
Even a local consumer confidence survey suggests that Rhode Islanders may be feeling more optimistic about the economy than other Americans.
