Salt bath nitrocarburizing at temperatures outside the conventional temperature range can offer improved performance in mechanical properties for plain carbon, alloy and austenitic stainless steels, as well as some cost benefits.

Historically, the processing temperatures used for ferritic nitrocarburizing in molten salt baths have been in the range of 1000 to 1075[degrees]F (540 to 580[degrees]C).
