Time was when just two scholars could claim something approaching a monopoly on the history of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). Henry Pelling (The British Communist Party: A Historical Profile [1958]) set the standard and L. J. Macfarlane (The British Communist Party: Its Origins and Development until 1929 [1966]) was the indispensable corrective. Pelling and Macfarlane are, however, no longer enough. Andrew Thorpe has made himself required reading.
