SYDNEY, Dec 30 Asia Pulse - The Australian dollar opened softer, falling nearly half a US cent in weekend trading as risk aversion trade sidelined the local currency.

At 0900 AEDT, the Australian dollar was at $US0.5608/13, compared with $US0.5641/46 at Friday's close.

The Australian dollar traded as low as $US0.5603 on Friday night, pushed lower by weakness on United States equity markets and risk aversion trading.

The high on Friday night was $US0.5649.
