``City of Secrets: The Truth Behind the Murders at the Vatican,'' by John Follain (William Morrow, 309 pages, $25.95).
In 1998, the bodies of the commander of the Swiss Guard, his wife and a 23-year-old lance corporal were found dead in their Vatican barracks. Within four hours _ long before an investigation was completed _ the Vatican definitively announced that the corporal had shot the couple in a "fit of madness."
The Italian police were denied access to the scene, and the Vatican refused help from Italian investigators. Forensic experts did autopsies in secret after first swearing never to speak of their findings.
