Even in his final hours, Giovanni Agnelli, 81, was trying to influence his family's hold on Fiat.

The honorary chairman of the Fiat group died Friday, Jan. 24, after a battle with prostate cancer, hours before a family shareholders' meeting that was expected to confirm his younger brother Umberto as the family head.

Giovanni Agnelli knew he couldn't attend, but he drafted the guidelines for a strategy session the night before.
