Touring other gardens is no doubt the best way to see what plant pairs you like best and to develop your own matchmaking skills. But what if you're looking for inspiration this winter?
Books are the best bet. "Perfect Partners: Beautiful Plant Combinations for Prairie Gardens" by Liesbeth Leatherbarrow and Lesley Reynolds (Fifth House Ltd., 2002, $15.95) is a great start. The authors, both experienced Canadian gardeners, pair tough, cold- hardy plants that can thrive without coddling here in the upper Midwest.
