Feb. 2--LAWRENCE, Mass.--Little did shoe manufacturer Richard Bass know when he agreed to start producing a prototype ballet shoe more than a decade ago, he made a choice that would save his company.
Courtesy of intense global competition, Bass' company, the family-owned Cardinal Shoe Corp. in Lawrence, is the last of a virtually extinct industry in a city once known as the shoe-making capital of the world.
At one time in the mid- 20th century, more than 120 shoe manufacturers churned out hundred of thousands of shoes every day.
