RICHMOND -- Virginia would end its unique ban on a governor serving successive terms under legislation advanced Friday by a House committee.
The 11-10 vote was a breakthrough for Del. Harry R. ``Bob'' Purkey, R-Virginia Beach, who has introduced the bill 12 straight years.
``It's a good day for Virginia,'' said Purkey, who argued that his measure, HJ515, would provide state government with much-needed continuity in leadership.
Virginia is the only state that does not allow governors to succeed themselves.
