Australia's charter boat industry is awaiting the outcome of negotiations between operators and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). In September 2002, the ATO issued a draft ruling claiming those who allow charter boat companies to manage their charter boats, rather than operating businesses themselves, could not receive certain tax benefits. The ruling raised fears $A200 million would be lost from the charter boat industry.
